Nottingham Trent University 2014 Degree Show: Odds on

Group project worked on with April Stracey

Brief: To create a concept and design a camapaign for the 2014 BA (Hons) Graphic Design Degree show. The purpose of a degree show is to entice industry and enable students to showcase their work to potentially get internships or even job offers.

Concept: To design an invitation to send to industry, catalogue layout that keeps with the theme of the concept to showcase each students work, as well as a website and any other promotional material to advertise the Degree show. The show is a big event and celebrates the work of all the students and we are essentially at the beginning of the race to get out into the industry.

Solution: The main idea of the show would be based on us all being at the beginning of the race. The visual language is representative of racing terms, which link to the chosen name 'Odds On.' This name makes a bold statement suggesting that we are all odds on favourites to succeed. The concept we wanted to be fun and light-hearted and this links with the bold and bright colour palette. The odds are all about numbers and the build up and are constantly changing. We felt this summed us up as a year group showing the confidence that we are all going to do well. This also links to how industry would be the ones deciding our odss before offering potential placements. Throughout the theme, phrases have been used to relate to us as individuals such as 115 dead certainties and no one is a long shot.
Colour palette: The chosen colour palette is bold, bright and suggests confidence.
Logo: The logo plays on the idea of 'the odds' and how they are constantly changing. Numbers have been incorporated in the logo and refers to how many of us are in the year and essentially how everyone is 'odds on' to do well. It is for the industry to view the show and give us their odds.
Animation: This would be to promote the degree show. The constant changing of the colours references the odds and plays on the whole build up before the race begins. This relates to the build up of the degree show and the excitement before.
Invite: The invite to industry would incorporate our line which is part of the identity and would be perforated as the way of opening it. The numbers would be spot varnished.
Inside the invite would be a ticket that industry would bring along to the event to fit with the whole concept of 'the races'
Other colours that would be used for the invite to fit with the colour palette
Catalogue: The Catalgoue front cover uses our line from the logo which is part of the identity relating to the 'odds.' When the catalgoue is closed colour tabs will be visible making it easy for industry to flick to a colour section they are interested in from viewing the show and again links to changing odds.
The contents page would resemble a race card and gives the 'form' of each individual. This is information such as email, number and their interests: (T) typographer, (IL) Illustrator, (A) animation etc.
Badge: All students would have a coloured badge depending on the section they fall on in the catalogue and upon arrival industry would be given a badge so that students and industry are able to identify eachother.
Throughout the catalogue bold statements would be used that relates to the theme and sums us up as a year group. This shows the confidence we have to succeed in the industry and links with our bold colour palette.
The numbers are representative of each individual in the register and is alphabetical. These would be spot varnished again linking with the effect of the changing odds.
Layout example of catalogue: The traingular block at the bottom of the spread is an indication to fold the page, linking with our line, if you like the work of a particular individual.
The winners enclosure:  A term used in horse racing where the winners of the race are paraded around. This section is for industry to collect business cards of their favourites from the degree show and slot them into the purple wallet.
The Space: Would represent the stalls in horse racing before the race has begun. The work would be behind two boards and industry would essentially enter them in the race and interact with the boards to reveal the work. The phrases used throughout the identity would be used as hanging banners around the show.
The website: The colour sections would be on the homepage and depending on the category wanting to be viewed when it is clicked on, the colour block transforms across the screen and grows.
The website then takes you to the work of everybody that is in that particular coour section and a crop of their work
Promotional Posters: Examples of the posters that would be used to advertise the show using the six statements to promote us as a year group.
