I've lived in Cornwall, England, for all of my life, a place that is typically thought of as the perfect place to go on holiday, as there are a lot of beaches and tourist attractions nearby, and is always presented as perfect. I am from Redruth however, a town that does not benefit from the tourist trade in comparison to places such as St Ives, Falmouth, Newquay, etc. It was famously known for its mining, which has now sadly died out, and although it is still an industrial town, Redruth has lost its popularity. Once filled shops on the high street are now empty and bare, an unused brewery five minutes away from my old secondary school has been subjected to a number of suspected arson attacks, and some things in general are not cared about or presented well. In this project I wanted to look at the normally considered banal details of my hometown and offer my own perspective on a county that is so often stereotyped as perfect and pretty. Shot on medium format colour film and a Bronica ETRSi, I wanted to look closely at the details that are neglected, in the same way that Redruth is often just forgotten about, by people live in and visit Cornwall.
