The Book:
The book I chose is Shoe Dog by Phil Knight. This book is about the establishment of Nike and it's journey from countless setbacks to becoming one of the most successful and well-known brands worldwide. I really enjoyed this book because I am a big fan of Nike products and I found Phil Knight's story to be very inspirational and motivating for many different aspects of life outside of business.
The Original:
Below is the original book jacket. As you can see it has a very minimalistic, clean design that represents the brand of Nike very well.
The Process:
My first thought of what objects I could use was shoes. However, I changed my mind because I didn't have a sufficient amount of shoes and I didn't like the formation the letters were taking. Here i a photo of what the process was looking like.
I then decided to use shoelaces because they would be much easier to mold and it had a better flow between letters. I practiced molding the laces multiple times until I got a shape I liked. It was a bit hard at first but I discovered that if I made the letters a bit smaller it was easier to get the laces to cooperate. I then took photos, and removed the background.
Inspiration:
The book Shoe Dog is about the origin story of Nike. While Nike is now a diverse company, it originated as a solely shoe company. To highlight that, I added in photos of the very first pair of Nike shoes. Going along with that, I made my type out of shoe laces because shoes are what kickstarted the empire that Nike is today. The typeface I used for the other text is called Source Sans Pro. I chose to use this typeface because it is very bold and blocky. The brand personality of Nike is about being confident, strong and fearless, and I felt like this typeface embodied that. Also, because Nike products tend to be very simple and clean cut with sharp edges, this typeface looks similar to what you often see Nike use.

Here is my final book jacket design. Some final touches I added were of course Nike logos, as well as some more shoe laces on the back cover to tie in the typeface I created and to make it overall more cohesive. I also used the signature Nike orange color throughout to keep it on brand.
