Lithos Typography book
Initially this projects main idea was to design a typeface based on a certain grid. Although in the process it evolved into an Historical dictionary about letters. It was interesting to think about the alteration of the letters through time. It was impressive to see the change in the meanings of the letters over time and the effect of cultural influences on the letters. The fact that many of the meanings we give to letters today are actually the result of these cultural interactions has played a big role in people’s understanding of communication. Trying to understand this process has given me a new perspective on my idea. The thought to make a book of the typefaces I designed, it also combined with the idea of making a dictionary in which the change of letters over time is explained and shown.
The name of my tpyeface ‘‘Lithos’’ means stone in ancient Greek language. I choose these name because it represents the both aspect of my project historical dictionary and stone-like letters. I inspired from many sources in this project like old metal-letterpresses, stone inscriptions and roman structures. Lithos project aims to design a historical letter dictionary which is based on my typeface with combining historical elements into one project and serve it as an educational dictionary.
