Design Cover for Novel 1984 by George Orwell

Book Cover Design Project for 1984
Our assignment was to design a cover for a popular novel. I chose the book 1984 by George Orwell. The novel takes place in London, in the nation of Oceania, where everything and everyone is run by The Party. The Party, also known as Big Brother, uses surveillance everywhere to allow them to control everything, including the history of it’s nation, language and even it’s members’ thoughts. The main character, Winston Smith feels frustrated with the control of The Party and the lack of ability to have free thoughts, speech, and expression of themselves.
Winston purchases a journal to capture his thoughtcrimes in secret. He also falls for his co-worker, Julia. They begin dating in secret and he receives a note from who he believes, is the leader for the Brotherhood, who seeks to destroy The Party. Winston and Julie visit him and are gifted a book that opposes The Party, and soon discover that not everyone is who they appear to be. Pushed to their breaking-point, Winston and Julia have to decide if they will choose each other or give in to The Party. They are both tortured and forced to decide.
My initial draft of each cover. I focused my designs on combining the titles with the surveillance theme. Also the handmade photo design included a mask, since The Party was unknown and characters were never who they seemed.
I focused on improving colors and alignment.
I added additional details and designs, updated the font and adjusted the alignment.
Final product!
