Keeps track of the foods in your house, when they are about to go bad, and suggests how to use them.
THE CHALLENGE
In the US there is 40% edible food waste, in large caused by consumers. This averages to each person throwing away about 20 pounds of food per month. I wanted to design an app to help consumers waste less.
UNDERSTANDING GOALS & CHALLENGES
Using a questionnaire and research, I learned the main pain points in household food waste and relucancy to cooking at home. The three biggest hurdles to cook at home are having enough time, the quality of food, and having all the required ingredients. The most common reasons for food waste is mold, past expiratoin, and looks bad, mostly throwing away dairy, fruits, and vegetables. There was no strong correlation between who people ate with and how much money was thrown away.
SKETCHING POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS
Using everything I learned from the user research, I created personas based on their behavior. Most everyone was frustrated cooking when they don't have all the required ingredients. I sketched possible solutions and created a 3-pane storyboard to start the flow.
DESIGN
I built high-fidelity frames in photoshop and used an extension to make a clickable prototype.
