Ramses Wasef is considered the greatest example of a true artist who left a legacy, as he departed but left behind extensive works spanning generations. He was the first teacher for these artists, instilling art within them, resulting in authentic Egyptian art, each artist with their unique touch, extending from their surrounding environment.
It all began in the 1950s when Ramses came to the village of Haraniya and purchased a piece of land. His primary goal was to establish a place with an artistic flair to provide them with a suitable artistic environment that would enable them to create and paint on fabric.
His first students were the village children, whom he hosted in the garden of his house to play. They began learning fabric painting without any references, as he allowed their imagination to produce drawings inspired by their surroundings
"When we extract the dye every year and store it, it's like celebrating Eid for us."
This statement from one of them expresses the importance of this annual event for them.
Ramses Wasef was a history of art professor who knew that the essence of fabric lies in color. Since 1957, he realized he was dealing with an agricultural society. Therefore, he was keen on cultivating plants that produce colors to ensure their availability. Alongside, it empowered them to control their raw material sources, making them the first controllers of the desired color intensity for their work. Moreover, their role doesn't just revolve around fabric but also extends to cultivating raw materials for colors and dyeing threads. They are the first and final hands in every stage of production.
Natural dye comes from three primary colors: red from the madder plant, yellow from the weld plant, and blue from the indigo plant. These vibrant colors have persisted for centuries without change
Artists next to their art after it came to light
The painting remains locked in the artist’s imagination alone during the execution period, which is approximately a year or more, without any references until it is completed
