"Cinema is possible as Art.
This does not mean that all films are beautiful. And that leaves open the question whether historical, economic, financial, social and cultural conditions have not made it dominantly today (if not definitively, as some claim), a mere industry, as it has been moreover accused of being so since its origin (even Canudo calls it the “image factory”), a simple aesthetic art of pleasure (to speak the language of Kant), an industry of pleasure and leisure. That's not what we're dealing with.
Cinema is possible as Art: this means that the connection of the Arts in it is possible not by chance or in a definitively enigmatic way, but according to a foundation, that of their affinity. The cinematographic work is not a combination of heterogeneous or heterogeneous means of expression more or less well linked, but that it can have the formal unity of a true work of art. The film, when it is beautiful, is the manifestation of the happy connection of all the Arts, as only opera before it could claim to achieve it in its own way, differently, less broadly, less systematically. But this is in no way a guarantee, nor a promise of success, nor even a help for the director; it is rather the cleanest characterization of the essential difficulty he has to face: what there is of the "total synthesis of all the arts", to speak like Canudo, a combination not so much of those of time with those of space than of the three great kinds of Arts, which Kant distinguishes, is that which constitutes the greatest difficulty for Art..."
