The Burning of Judas

Kids from Nea Chora in Chania build and then burn Judas on Good Saturday's ritual
The ritual of the burning of Judas takes place every year on Good Saturday at Orthodox Greece during Easter time. Young people, boys and girls from many places build the Judas effigy and hung it hours before the burn ritual. Some years ago the custom dictated that the Judas effigy has to be hunged on Good Friday and then burned on Good Saturday ritual but because of sabotages from rival neighborhoods most now make the Judas effigy, hung it and burn it on the same day. // Images of preparations and the burning from Nea Chora neigborhood in Chania
The burning of Judas is an Easter-time ritual in many Orthodox and Catholic Christian communities, where an effigy of Judas Iscariot is burned. Hunders of Orthodox wait for the "Chirstos Anesti" (Jesus is Ressurected) words from the priest at 00.00 sharp when the boys of the neighborhood set the pile of wood on fire and the Judas effigy is consumed in flames. The burning is accompanied by the throwing of petards.
