Designing the Times - Editorial Design

Editorial/Investment Times
Designing the times.
Investment Times
Produce a cover and spread for finicial magazine "Investment Times".

Brief: In order to answering a Junior Designer job interview Malagraphic Designs was asked to design a single cover and spread for a magazine publisher based in Hammersmith, London UK. It was supposedly a financial magazine but the client did not have a copy to show as sample. We had a three day deadline with which to complete the brief and was given no info or content regarding the magazine except its name "Investment Times".

Observation: Financial magazines are serious and profesional, when it come to tone in design. The economic recession may deter people interested in investment.

Process: We sourced imagery, for the cover and spread, that had a professional, commercial style. Our market research helped us ascertain the visual language typically used in financial magazine; knowledge was extremely helpful in producing our final design. Most of the samples sourced used blocky type and bright colours. The spead adhered to a standard grid. We used consistent, complementary typography that distiguished heads from body text adequately. And although this was a dummy project to assess Malagraphic Design's capabilities, thus only needing one spread, we aslo considered running heads and folios in the final design.

Outcome: This project helped us demonstrate Malagraphic Design's expertise in editorial and directly influnced clients deciding to commission us, having been impressed with what they was.
