Making of Pop-up Book
Hatkoti Days

Topic Inspiration
Every summer vacation, we used to visit my father’s place.
Because of his job he used to live in a remote place somewhere in mountains.
So, we’d pack up and visit him on every vacation possible.
But for me it was different. For me, it was about family.
It was the only time we all would be together.
Background Research
I gathered the majority of the photos I took while hiking in the mountains
and used collages to try to tell a story.
Through these collages, I began to revisit the location,
capturing the essence of my journey.
Inspired sketches
Here are some sketches inspired by the stories created from the collage
Explorations in Pop-up's
I began with the fundamentals and worked
my way up to the pop-up mechanism.

Environment and Character explorations
After finishing the story and pop-up explorations, I moved
on to creating characters for the story and determining
what kind of environment they’ll live in.

Final Characters
Cats and dogs are important characters in my story. Here are a few of their rough drawings.
Making of First Spread
I began the first spread by sketching out the layout.
Rough Prototype
I wanted one major pop-up in the middle of the layout,
along with minor flaps and pull strips on either side of the page.
Final Prototype
I began by cutting a thick piece of paper to make
the main mountain structure and other flaps.

I used the same paper to cut out some paper trees for the mountain structure,
and painted each one separately.
I digitally sketched the rest of the idea first for better reference and
painted it by hand on the same piece of paper.
Then began putting the pieces together to create my first spread.
After assembling everything, I painted the base,
chose the appropriate font, and had it printed on the same paper.

My first spread was complete once everything was put together.
Soon the entire book came to life!
This book would not have been possible without YouTube
videos from different artists and Duncan Birmingham’s pop-up book.
