Second Year Uni Projects - BA Illustration and Visual Media UAL
Food for Thought’ Project Outcome:
The aim for this project was to create a 2D piece with a narrative about food and our relationship/ view on food. I created a mixed media zine using watercolour paints and screen printing. I carried out in depth research about my own food habits and the habits of the people around me, after realising that my favourite part of food is the cooking I decided to make this piece a sort of recipe book.
I created imagery based on the ingredients and equipment used for this meal and the text comes from interviews I did (quotes, iconic phrases etc.), notes and audio and sound recordings I made whilst cooking and eating, as well as instructions for the meal. I aimed to make the font/imagery/layout make it so the reader felt like I was guiding them through the meal, like a journey.
The colours in the background represent my personal thoughts and feelings throughout the process of cooking one of my favourite meals.

‘Space is the Place’ Project Outcome:
The aim of this project was to create a sight specific installation that benefits the people and the area, the final piece was a prototype that we displayed at an exhibition. We were required to make this project ready to present to a financial backer, so had to include all budgeting and any other planning we may need, such as planning permissions. The main thing I wanted was for my work to be sustainable, so I see recycled materials that are long lasting.
My Concept: I chose to locate my installation on a section of Old Kent Road, I wanted to bring some excitement and joy to an otherwise dull/ littered area. I did research on the surrounding areas, in particular the parks and green areas. I noticed a pattern of faded colours in run down parks, so I chose bright primary colours to contrast this, however I wasn’t able to use these in my prototype. The designs came from the shapes, patterns and textures I saw in the parks. I used all of this research and experimentation (printing, sketching, photography) to create a design for a mosaic that would be place throughout the area of Old Kent Road.
