Cherman Crest is a plaster cast of a mold that I created. The objects displayed in the cast were objects that felt true to my childhood. A few of the notable objects embedded in the piece were star anise, marijuana leaves, ants, roaches and roach eggs, guitar packs, razors, skin up, panties, and braids that were all held together by a belt. I spent a lot of time handcrafting each and every one of these items out of clay which. I crafted most of these little trinkets and then the items I didn’t replicate by hand I got from discarded materials that I've had around. The panties, razors, belt, and spices were materials that I cut up to embed into this piece because I thought it was important to have the real woven in with the replicated. What does it mean to have a fabricated object versus real materials? I created a wooden frame that I added wet clay to have the ability for the handcrafted pieces and real objects to be embedded into the board. I then vacuum-sealed it and created a mold out of the makeshift model. When I vacuum-sealed the model, most of the objects were not salvageable so the mold was the only thing that I had left. I did a couple of tests using regular plaster and a natural plaster that I mixed myself from horse manure, wheat paste, and a couple of other things. Once I was satisfied with the casts I did this technique that one of my classmates showed me, where I placed a thin cotton piece of paper and wet it with a spray bottle so I could use a cloth pouch that had a sponge in it in ink and I would ever so carefully dab on the cast.
