Analysis of the Stempel Garamond LT STD Font
Claude Garamont (1499-1561) created the famous - Garamond-Types. Although his name ends with t, all the font-names end with d. The Garamond is the most widespread Roman type face. There are a lots of different types that are all based on The Garamond type. The Stempel Garamond which was cut 1925 by the D. Stempel Ag in Frankfurt on the Main, is one of the most beautiful types.

The work consists of two books coffered in a boxed set.
The boxed set has a hole in front so you can see the blood red portrait of Garamont printed with a nyloprint. Both books are made of  light yellow fabric. In this way all components arise to a related oeuvre which combines tradition with modernity. Tradition through the long-established way of bookbinding, the typographic-colour red and the partly strict layout. Colours which divide the books in several chapters, relation to contemporary use of the font and big coloured sites give the books a modern attitude.

The first book approaches the development of the font, the life of Garamont the  other types based on The Garamond as well as the usage in contemporary designs. All in all  it was very difficult to separate the right from the false information because up to now prevails confusion about the real development. One aim was to solve this chaos with a strict investigation.

In the beginning of the second book there is an explanation about the font-family and a comparison of the digital version with the original lead typesetting. Finally the main content of the book is the analysis of the characters. In the end you get to know about -micro-typographic issues.

…finally GARAMOND!

…this work was made with blood, sweat and tears…

THANK YOU for your attention!
