Brighton & Hove Independent
My first job as a graphic designer was working for the Brighton & Hove Independent Newspaper.
As a partner of Brighton Fringe Festival the paper secured ten second billboard advertisements at various locations across the town which would run at certain times of day during the festival.
I thought a creative way of showcasing the newspaper quickly was through a fun and engaging illustration that had subtle movements, clear nods to the town and utilised the brand's colour palette.
On my drives home through the city I was inspired, and got the idea to build up a city skyline out of newspaper, feeling this could be a bit different and grab people's attention. I picked out noticeable buildings and Architecture to the town found good quality images online and traced the silhouettes for accuracy - the Clock Tower, Royal Pavilion, Pier, Seafront Lantern Lights, Beach Huts, and Wheel then clipped newsprint scans from the paper to them. I then layered these in such a way that I could manipulate minimal parts, such as the clock hands, sea, seagulls, lights flashing, and wheels turning, and staggered how each item appeared to create my moving paper city.
Ten years on into my career as a designer this still is one of my favourite motion pieces!
This moving city was then implemented as statics across social media channels & banner advertisements for the paper.

Every now and then the paper produced a supplement, this is one of my favourites (Brighton Fashion Week 2014). I collaborated with an artist to produce this working on the page-layout and artworking, they contributed the full page triangular pics. I used the BFW logo to create typographic titles throughout and came up with a complimentary triangular style for images within articles.
