M R T  Train Station Bench Design
F o r m a l  :

The design of the bench was purposed and made on the 31 July as a part of a competition that was held by MRT Corp. It is considered to be a standalone form of public art/installation, as it is located in a public space and may be experienced by a wide range of people. The range of the artwork is open to the public and accessible to all generations. Public art refers to artwork that is displayed in public spaces, such as streets, parks, or public buildings, and is often intended to engage the public and enhance the visual character of the surrounding environment.

It is also a form of functional art or design, as it serves a practical purpose (providing a place for people to sit and rest) while also incorporating aesthetic elements. The design of the bench could incorporate various artistic elements, such as the use of materials, form, color, and texture, to create an aesthetically pleasing piece of furniture.

Bamboo and metal can be used to create a visually appealing bench that evokes a sense of history and tradition. Bamboo has a natural and organic appearance, which can be used to create a rustic or tropical vibe. Metal, on the other hand, can be used to create a more industrial or modern look.

The combination of the material, elegant curve design, and interactive nature make the bench a beautiful and welcoming addition to the train station environment that will lead towards a conversation among people who sit nearby to each other. An exchange of information between  user to user may occur.

As a form of public art, the bench encourages users to engage with it in some way, such as by sitting on it, touching it, or interacting with it through movement or other physical actions. Its presence in a train station also adds to its interactivity, as it provides a place for travelers to rest and relax while they wait for their trains.

Material selection: The use of bamboo in the design of the bench could also add to its aesthetic appeal through the natural texture and color of the material. Bamboo is known for its strong and durable qualities, which could make it a practical choice for use in a train station setting.

Durability: Both bamboo and metal are durable materials that are able to withstand heavy use and harsh weather conditions. This makes them suitable for use in public installations, where the bench may be subjected to constant wear and tear.

A bench design in a train station with a heritage theme could be considered a form of functional art or design that incorporates elements of the station's history or cultural heritage. The design of the bench incorporate materials and forms of elements that reflect the heritage theme of the train station, such as traditional craft techniques, local materials, or motifs associated with the station's history or cultural context.

Cultural significance: Bamboo and metal can be used to evoke a sense of cultural heritage in a bench design. For example, bamboo is to be associated with traditional Asian cultures, while metal may be associated with industrial or modern design. Using these materials can help to create a bench design that resonates with the cultural history of the local area.

Overall, the use of bamboo in the design and material of a bench in a train station with a heritage theme could help to create a sense of connection to the past, while also contributing to the overall aesthetic appeal of the space.
