In this color studies assignment, we needed to create our own pieces of work based on someone else's photography. We used a variety of different artistic values through the application of color, creative mark making, and composition.
Pictured are my color palettes. I recreated a picture in 4 different styles: monochromatic, complementary, split complementary & triad.
This is the original photo that I based my art on. Something about the silhouette of the man with the surfboard along the rocks & small waves reminded me of when I first started learning how to surf!
Monochromatic - this piece was super fun to create! The way that this piece used only one color but with different shades & tints was super satisfying considering the other 3 pieces used a variety of colors.
Complementary - This was my favorite out of the 4 different versions. I really gravitate toward cool & neutral colors so this piece was the most eye-pleasing one in my opinion. The brush used in the sky almost reminds me of wood (which is a texture that I wouldn't expect to work in this photo).
Split-complementary - I really like the brush used on the rocks in this version. The marbled look gives the rocks a "realism" feel & I feel that it works with the wispiness of the sky's texture.
Triad - At first, I wasn't sure about how I felt about the different ranges of color used in this piece. I almost felt odd using colors that didn't necessarily complement one another, but I do feel that the use of the different textured brushes helped balance it out.
