This is Love: Broadsheet Publication & Printed Fables

“God gives us the ugliness so we don’t take the beautiful parts of life for granted.” - Colleen Hoover
Sometimes, love is ugly. sometimes, it’s beautiful. Sometimes it ends in heartbreak, and sometimes it ends in that cheesy happily ever after. Love is a multifaceted thing. It’s an infatuation that can last a moment, or a lifetime. It is that overwhelming feeling where you feel like you can’t breathe around someone, or when you want to make another person the happiest they’ve ever been. Love has many phases. Especially over an entire lifetime.
This is the cover of the publication. I drew on the mirror of my bathroom with lipstick and photographed, edited, and designed the cover.
The first spread focuses on "passion & vexation" contrasting the beautiful and ugly parts of love. I really focused on visual hierarchy on this page, and contrast is a large theme here. I also included an interactive element within the ampersand.
For the second spread and center spread, I decided to do all typography and no imagery.
I love this quote and I thought it would be a beautiful poster to hang up if someone received the publication.
For the third spread I focused on parenthood and infertility, highlighting a quote talking about the life cycle that forms around an expectant mother's stomach. The quote ends on a somber note, and then I lead into the conversation about infertility and how to talk about it without being insensitive.
For this project I decided to focus on the topic of love. As a young adult in today's world, there is a lot of pressure when it comes to finding love and navigating life. It seems as if you are supposed to go to school, find a significant other, graduate, get engaged then married, and have kids. I wanted to emphasize that love is so much more than that. It is so much more difficult, messy, and complicated. I decided to use Colleen Hoover novels for this publication because I love her as an author, but also because she does an amazing job of addressing the ugly parts of love in life. I think people can learn a lot from these stories, so I compiled some of the most important story lines and lessons I have learned from reading Colleen's novels.
Project Statement
This broadsheet publication was designed for Typography II in Fall of 2022 at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln, for educational purposes only. The instruction of this project was to creatively arrange narratives that merge manners and etiquette with fables and illustrations or images into an eight page printed broadsheet publication. The content of this publication is based on the different phases of love in life, with an emphasis on how to navigate with the ugly parts of love and etiquette on how to talk about them. This publication is inspired by the work of  New York Times bestselling author Colleen Hoover. She writes about the good, the bad and the ugly parts of love. People across the globe are appreciative of her storytelling and the morals her novels tell. According to National Public Radio, Colleen has sold over 8.6 million print books this year. Readers are inspired by her transparentness and the way she can tell a story. Colleen Hoover has addressed every topic about love stated in this publication within her books. Along with direct quotes and paraphrased quotes from her books: Ugly Love (Aug. 2014), November 9 (Nov. 2015), Verity (Feb. 2020), All Your Perfects (Jul. 2018), and It Ends with Us (Aug. 2016).  The publication also includes advice from Atlanta Center for Reproductive Medicine on infertility etiquette (2022), advice from The Hope Line (2022) on how to know when your partner is ready for marriage, and statistics on domestic violence from National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (2022). Some images were cut out of the October 2022 publication of W Magazine, and photographed over pages of various Colleen Hoover novels. The photo on the cover was taken by Josie Kenkel.
