Almost everybody these days seem to be distracted in one way or another.
In this post-modern society, it is not unusual to go outside and see the vast majority of people glued to some sort of screen, barely lifting their eyes to interact with the world around them. The rapid progression of smart devices and social media over the last decade has encouraged over-consumption to the detriment of our inner lives. The technologies we have become enslaved to constantly bombard our brains, exhausting and overwhelming our dopaminergic systems leaving us dulled to natural and everyday pleasures.
This project, Underneath It All aims to ameliorate the numbing effects of over-consumption by transforming conventionally undesirable and unappealing environments into beautiful ones.
The work of Todd Hido, in particularly his well known photographic series Homes at Night served as a great deal of inspiration within the inception of this project. Hido’s photographs within this series depict suburban homes at night, presenting a gloomy yet alluring suburban world. The light being emitted by each dwelling creates vibrant colours and rich contrast, evoking a range of questions and emotions.
