Book Design Project: The Catcher in the Rye
Programs used: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Ipad Procreate
Briefing: Redesigning a classic book using my illustrations.
Concept: My purpose was to reflect two of the main themes that appear throughout the book: the smoking, which symbolises Holden's ways of coping (or avoiding) the overwhelming emotions he's feeling and the city, that represents the stage in which he's trying to find a place, a meaning and his own identity.
References: I based my design on these three images below. From left to right, there's a drawing I made some time ago with loneliness as a concept, a painting by James Rizzi that has this childlike shapes and faces and this sketch from the original book cover of The Catcher in the Rye.
Process: By using the contrast between this childish style and the boy smoking a cigarette, I wanted to represent the loss of innocence that the book portrays.
Thank you!
