THE SCRATCH BAND + BAUHAUS DESIGN STYLE | MUSIC POSTER

This finale music poster is inspired by the Graphic Design era of Bauhaus and designed to mesh with the style of a band from Dublin, Ireland, called The Scratch.
Research
Bauhaus is an art and design movement that started in 1919 in Weimar, Germany. The concept of Bauhaus is seen through the use of overlapping shapes of triangles, circles, and squares shown on flat planes that created dimension. When one sees Bauhaus, it gives its stance through the primary colors of red, blue, and yellow with black and white.
The Scratch is a band from Dublin, Ireland. Their music flavor is a mix of metal, acoustic guitar, and traditional Irish music. The dove is a symbol of their band, therefore was the birth of the textile elements.
Incorporating both of these styles was a beautiful meld.
Sketches
When you research, you must put your ideas on paper. There are over thirty sketches created. Out of all of them, three were selected to start the comp process. Quite a few of the sketches, I may like to revisit at some time and possibly create a series. Sketching is a beautiful process. Just when you think you have nothing, something else comes out onto paper.
Textile Element
The textile was created with felt and cardstock to add dimension and texture to the shadows. In order to capture all the shadows, the textile was placed in sunlight after assembly. Photoshop was then used to add a layer of contrast and saturation to the textile. The file was then transferred to the poster file in Illustrator. This textile went through two development stages for the finale.
Comps
All three comps were strategically created but only made it to the finale because they dueled both styles of Bauhaus and The Scratch. The poster to the left was a bit of a rebellious act against the primary colors, but it was a favorite. There were too many things going on in the poster that was in the middle. No there for the eyes to rest, yet this speaks a lot of the band The Scratch. The poster on the right was the final choice because of the unity of both styles. The hierarchy of the dove with the Bauhaus circle. The unity was met softly with a loud punch.
Finale
In the finale, some additional touches were added from the comp stage. There was an added inverted small circle below the bigger inverted circle to create balance and tension, a red eye to carry all three of the primary colors, and more texture was added to the dove. Overall, the design has the Bauhaus flare along with the raw of the band The Scratch. A duo of extremes in simplicity and chaotic matter living cohesively in unity with one another.
