Surreal Island - China Duty Free

Macau is known for its larger-than-life attitude to experiences, having established its identity as a major casino city in the last 15 years. CDF (China Duty Free) took that spirit to heart with the design of their 7,500 sq. foot, flagship retail space within the Grand Lisboa Palace.

We created “Surreal Island”, a magical, illustrative world made of character zones, anchored around different product types. A serene lake, a thriving rainforest, an ocean in the sky. All full to the brim with flora and fauna inspired by a hybrid mix of retail products and fantastical creatures. A Tiger Bag chases silk scarf butterflies, a lipstick statue of Venus rises by night, and enormous porcelain whales dance in the sky.

We applied two key ingredients to create Surreal Island: a play on scale, and clever visual combinations of products and creatures. Each whimsical narrative was illustrated and brought to life in motion, designed to seamlessly exist alongside the hustle and bustle of the retail environment. Each scene is highly intricate, with day and night cycles, revealing new discoveries view after view.

From 20-meter-long ceiling screens, to wall panels three times the height of a person, the artwork comes to life across 9 large-scale LED installations throughout the space, bringing the extraordinary into an otherwise ordinary retail experience.
