The Story
In grade 12, my chemistry teacher had a carpet python that he kept in an enclosure in our classroom. Every few weeks he would feed it during class to show it striking. At some point it escaped from its enclosure over a weekend. It was missing for a few days until it was found by another teacher. The running theory was that it climbed up equipment that was leaned up against the wall and into the ceiling, which is where I got the idea for this comic strip.

Fortunately the events that actually took place in school didn't happen like this and this comic strip has been dramatised. But as they say, never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

Week 3 - Reflection
The comic strip task for week 3 was a mixed bag. I was struggling to think of an event that happened during high school that I could compress into a short comic strip. When I remembered the snake incident, that’s when things started to pick up and I got started on modifying the events to make it more worthy of being used for this assignment.

I’ve done storyboards for products before and while comic strips are similar, they do vary as they swing more towards providing entertainment than transferring information. The 4-step process provided the necessary tools to build up the story I wanted to create and help form the stages and images within the comic strip (Taboada, 2022). I laid out the events of the story, characters, setting and situation as per examples and it helped me start the transfer of getting the plot out of my head and onto the page.

I went with a simpler aesthetic style. Basic, rough linework with character expressions that are solely based on 2 dots (eyes) and 2 lines (eyebrows). I really enjoyed this basic form of storytelling and was actually really surprised at how much expression was shown using this style. The large effect that could be created from raising the two tiny eyebrows was really satisfying to see.
