Tree Sparrow {a three-dimensional illustration}

The task was to create an interesting and naturalistic three-dimensional illustration of a bird, fox, wolf, lizard, or frog. I choose a sparrow.
Below are a few images of Tree Sparrow and my process.
I started by building a collection of reference photos and reasearching size and proportions. I then built a wire armature to scale and used paper bags and masking tape to build out the form.
Next, I sculpted the body with paper clay (mixture of toilet paper pulp, joint compound, flower, oil, and glue). While the clay was drying I built a small branch out of the same materials for the bird to rest upon.
After the main form was dry I built out the tail and worked on the talons and tree branch. I ran out of wire and realized that my initial faux branch would have been too small so I decided to build a hybrid tree incorporating my feaux branch in with some real ones.
The final step for me was to paint the sculpted sparrow and perch him on the branch. I used 3 main reference photos and took some creative artistic and illustrative liberties in the areas of vibrance, variety, colors, and contrast.
