The Brief: Create a book based on a childhood memory. Take an interesting aspect of the memory and transform it into the narrative of the book.
When I was a toddler, I fell into a massive puddle on the beach and felt very trapped. This memory led me to design a book to help someone suffering from claustrophobia.
Each spread in the book features a negative phrase that a typical claustrophobia sufferer might say. There are tabs on each spread that once lifted, transform the negative phrase into a positive message.
The tabs also reveal further text, offering advice to sufferers about how to overcome some of the most common symptoms of claustrophobia.
The colour scheme and layout were inspired by the original memory, as it happened on a beach. I used perfect binding with french folds to create the book, as the french folds hide the backs of the tabs and make the book feel more substantial.
