SUMMER
**Runner Up in Competition**
Poundland Competition to produce a bag design that will be available in the summer, and appeal to both genders, and of all ages. My response is quite simple but effective at getting the message of summer across. I decided to use a selection of summer items, after asking numerous people what they thought of when hearing the word summer. For me personally, I think of going on holiday, or enjoying time outdoors with friends and family. I wanted these items to show this, which is why there is a mixture of sport and beach items. The sports items; a bicycle, tennis racket and football are perhaps the most undertaken sports of the summer, as the weather is better and more enjoyable, plus of course sporting events such as Wimbledon, Tour De France, and this year especially, the World Cup.
When I was younger, I used to enjoy a nice day out to the sea side with my family, and that's where the inspiration for this bag came from. Most families will go on the beach, maybe build a sandcastle, have a dip in the sea, and eat an ice cream, or perhaps go collecting shells.
The postcard was an item that I chose to contain the necessary text for the bag, as a wide variety of postcards can be easily found in all British seaside-towns, and a lot of people like collecting these, as well as using them for their original purpose of sending them in the post to friends and relatives back home.
The items themselves are silhouettes and contain minimal detail, and are found in only 3 colours which I think makes the overall design much more appealing and summery. I used blue as the background as this is often associated with summer - blue skies, the sea, etc. I added a touch of grunge brush detail over each silhouette to give them a bit of texture.
As this bag needed to appeal to practically everyone, I think I have achieved this, as no matter who you are, you are never too young or too old to enjoy a day at the sea side (when the weather is nice).
