Asian Representation in Current Media

Asian Representation in Current Media
Movies are prevalent in the growth of society, especially in terms of exposure to cultures. Mainstream media plays a vital role not only in entertainment but also educating the public on people's stories. Asian representation used to rely on characters whose sole purpose was to become a side character of a main character, who is part of a major race, which would be forgotten in the next scenes because they were only a comic relief or a stereotypical oriental type of character who only depicts cultures cherry picked during colional times, which did not define the entire community. Therefore, accurate Asian representation, specifically Chinese representation, in my humble opinion, is prevalent to educate the public and display creative potentials.
Visual Research/References
Based on my research, I have picked three mainstream movies that have represented Asian culture in a well written way that was not stereotypical and included an Asian main character. The chosen movies include, Crazy Rich Asians, Turning Red and Everything, Everywhere, All At Once.
Draft Sketch
Initially, I planned to depict the respective movie main characters in illustration form according to their official posters to showcase their statistics such as user ratings and box office in an illustrative level chart based on its popularity. After consultation, I decided to simplify the illustrations used into icons that represented the movies instead of detailed illustrations to make it easier for the audience to read the infographic.
Idea Development
After another consultation, my simplified sketch had been approved for further development in digital vector format using Adobe Illustrator.
Final Result
I decided to use a color palette that focused heavily on red and colors similar to it. This is because red is a color of good fortune in Chinese culture and is used everywhere in festivals to bring out a joyous environment. The only adjustments done was the text alignment so that I would be able to improve legibility. Fonts used for this infographic include Bauhaus 93 for the header and 新宋体 (Sim Sun) for body text.
