1984 Conceptual Book Cover

1984 Book Cover
In this project, I have designed three covers for 1984, a classic dystopian literature by George Orwell. Through the first design it is reflectec a key element of the novel, which is the protagonist's greatest fear. Through the second and third designs, it is intended to reflect (through the perspective of the designer), the Orwell's message and the point of view behind the narrative of the Novel.

Background

This project aims to celebrate one of the most influential books of all time, 1984. The Library of Congress presents an exhibition with historical artifacts, original manuscripts, first editions and other objects related to the original authorship and publication of each text. This project aims to present three covers for this program, which will offer new cover concepts for this novel focusing on the meaning of each book and the story and key elements of the novel.

First design: Hand made cover
This cover uses hand-made rats from newspaper clippings which alludes to two key elements of the novel, information in newspapers, which is constantly changing, and rats, which are the main character's greatest fear.

Throughout the novel, the protagonist highlights the dangers of thinking. In the world of 1984 people have to doublethink, which is a process of indoctrination in which people have to accept conflicting information from the media as truth.

This cover reflect two of the protagonist's greatest concerns: internal fears (the rats), and accept the "truths" ans statements presented by the system.
Second cover: Type Only
This cover uses only typography to create the cover concept of the 1984 novel. The concept to be conveyed is the idea of being constantly watched, which is the constant feeling of the 1984 universe. This is achieved through typography manipulation which incorporates the shape of a security camera at number 1, and camera lenses at the other numbers, all of which are looking in different directions. Additionally, it is emphasized that the security camera is focusing on the author, so that nothing escapes the sight of the security cameras.

Orwell through 1984 reflects the dangers of socialism, especially the obsessive surveillance of being constantly watched by the system, which is conveyed through the design of this cover.
Third Design: Designer’s Choice
In "1984" the television screen is watching you and everyone is spying on everyone. Through this design, the feeling of being constantly watched by others is conveyed by making use of the creative strategy of juxtaposition, and replacing people's heads with security cameras. The style of the cover is illustration, which focuses on a person surrounded by others who are constantly watching. Broadcasting the terror of 1984.
