Project Summary

Capturing a moving audience with a message is the main goal of a poster. Engaging and interesting composition are keys for a graphic designer to succeed on creating a great poster. Using elements and principles of design that was the challenge I took on creating this Jazz Festival poster for my first project in NYIAD school.

Process Description

For this first assignment, Illustrative poster design, I have used one of the templates provided, the Jazz Festival. To create unity in the poster, I have chosen to have a visual unity using shapes that have all the same orientation as the text and a contextual unity with lines that can remind a music sheet and a photo, both related to music.

For the choice of colors, I have chosen my main photo and used the color picker to extract the three main colors of the theme, warm and smooth. This is how I see a jazz festival ambiance. Then I have added black or white to have three different values for each hue, some of the values have evolved during the process to be sure to have the best visual possible, like having a darker blue on the element of the middle to emphasize text and lines. The light background is a rectangle shape filled with a light-yellow color.

For the three main elements of the composition, I have used the rectangle shape tool and rotated them following the same direction. I have used lines and strokes to draw the music sheet in the central element. I have also used several rectangle shapes and pathfinder tools to create the bottom shape and used it as a mask to frame the photograph.

Finally, I have also created tickets as extra. What is an event without tickets!
