Skeletons in the Closet

An illustration of the phrase "skeletons in the closet".

One of my challenges when making this piece was trying to convey the phrase without drawing a literal skeleton. I achieved this goal through the use of custom typography leading the eye from the main character to the bursting door. The expression of the character hints at a deep worry or anxiety, conveying the meaning behind the phrase, to hide secrets of the past.

I chose to use a cartoony paper cutout style for this illustration in order to keep the illustration simple and focus on the use of shape to create a clear, expressive piece.
