The PROTESTER Bible.
With demonstrations and uprisings kicking off over the world, there are countless accounts of police brutality and shocking fatalities. It seems to me that many protesters are unsure of how to appropriately behave in the heat of a full-scale demonstration. There is no resource informing protesters how to keep safe.
Many people want to express their views, but are afraid. They have the misconception that demonstrations are dangerous. However, they are safe if you use your head. I want to give those people the confidence to stand up for what they believe in.
That is exactly why I interpreted the Protest! Brief as a chance to develop such a document. A protestor bible- full of tips on how to stay safe and protest efficiently. Aimed specifically at new protestors.
My concept is- ‘Make Protest safe’ this is also my mission.
The brief asked – what am I passionate about? Rather than argue a pre-packaged cause I have an opinion on, I chose something everyone will agree on- the right to protest. I want people to actually get out there and stand up for whatever they believe in.
This document should give them the confidence to go protest. It should also give them the knowledge how to do this securely.
The cover. Kept it simple, regonisable and to the point. No need for dicking about here.
This is my personal favorite. i was struggling for ages trying to come up with something clever, then this dropped from the sky and It was done in under an hour.
How it would look as a black and white print out.
The style grew organically from the scamps, but I knew from the start I wanted it to have a uniform unique graphic style. I was inspired by= picket signs, Punk Zines, constructivism and low-fi underground.
Zines and leaflets have a long history within the Protest Culture. As a cheap and quick method of spreading manifestos. They are successful because people can put them in their pocket, take it home, share and pass on to friends. Best of all, they can be reproduced further by enthusiastic followers.
With governments now hacking and disabling mobile devices at protests, I think paper is a safer alternative for this information. It cannot be censored or firewalled like a website or application. Keep it off the grid.
The grassroots style of this seems more true to the ‘protest heritage/mind-set.’ It may have more valuable street cred this way; which is important because this document will be handed out at protests and collages. Respect is everything.
Cheap to produce, it is just one double-sided sheet of paper with a cut in the middle. It is intended to be printed on recyclable paper, but can be reproduced with a scanner on any paper. No staples to hold it together, so it is very easy to reproduce.
