Forms from Black Rectangles
Forms from Black Rectangles (Series) is a collection of black and white design studies focusing on design principles under the constraint of imposed sets of rules. In each study, I apply principles of design (balance, emphasis, pattern, rhythm, variety, and unity) to create a sensibility of composition. Starting with three 2" x 6" pieces of black construction paper, I utilized methods of shifting, cutting, tearing, and bending the paper to create a composition within a 7" x 7" piece of white railroad board, with a 1/2" white border. Chief informants of each study include texts from Molly Bang's book Picture this.
