Housing in Chandigarh (India)

‘Using simple construction techniques and concrete as main material, the compact, massive, block shaped design aims to protect houses from the direct sunlight.’

THIS PROJECT was submitted to contribute to an already developing site on the edge of  sector 45 in the town of Chandigarh, India. The masterplan arranged a trapezoidal 4-hectare site adjacent to a slum settlement. The proposal aims to provide residential, social and commercial facilities to this conflictive, poorly equipped city area.

The scheme, set on one of the four blocks arranged by the masterplan, disposes a total of 70 apartments and 6 multi purpose spaces in an area of 90000 m2. Houses are located in the upper level, surrounding large, landscaped courtyards. The street level is filled with community facilities –laundry, library, kindergarden and other social meeting spaces- as well as a car parking.
Pedestrians can walk around public ground level. Private apartments are accesed via day-lit ramps, while cars are leaded to a semi-basement linear car parking.

The houses are in two different sizes (a 100 m2 two-bedroom apartment and a 170 m2 three-bedroom apartment). Each of them contains two small private patios, bringing light into the living spaces in the first floor. The living and dining areas are linked to the kitchen in a unique space, opened to one of the courtyards. The bed-rooms have their own bath-room. A stair offers direct access to the roof-level, which becomes a walled, open-air living-room.

Using simple construction techniques and concrete as main material, the compact, massive, block shaped design aims to protect houses from the direct sunlight. The inwardly oriented apartments with deep narrow patios, provide shade and natural ventilation. Humidity is increased by means of large landscaped courtyards located in the centre of the blocks.
