Visual Metaphor

Starting the Personal Metaphor part of this project I started looking into words I wanted to use to describe myself . After some research I decided the best thing to do would be something humours would be a good idea and started looking into one liners and puns. I think a joke would show that I am a laid back person who likes to add humour to his work.

I found some terrible jokes and some even worse puns but here are some I found:

The early bird might get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.
I am like a squirrel, just trying to get a nut
Im alike a parachute to skydivers, hopefully you won’t forget me
I'm like Bob Marley, I too like my dougnuts with Jammin.
I am like conjunctivitis.com...A site for sore eyes.
I am like cosmetic surgery... people usually turn there nose up.

Puns that could maybe be adapted to fit the I''m like a template

I tried to catch some fog. I mist.

I know a guy who's addicted to brake fluid. He says he can stop any time.

How does Moses make his tea? Hebrews it.

I stayed up all night to see where the sun went. Then it dawned on me.

This girl said she recognized me from the vegetarian club, but I'd  never met herbivore.

I'm reading a book about anti-gravity. I can't put it down.

They told me I had type A blood, but it was a type-O.

This dyslexic man walks into a bra.

I didn't like my beard at first. Then it grew on me.

When you get a bladder infection, urine trouble.

What does a clock do when it's hungry? It goes back four seconds..

Broken pencils are pointless.

I used to be a banker, but then I lost interest.

Velcro - what a rip off!

Cartoonist found dead in home. Details are sketchy.

After looking into more jokes I decied to broaden my reserach and look into different themes. I deciced to do this by looking into Richards presentation into 40 ways to get in the mood for ideas generation and no.7 was to rewrite the problem. Because I thought about a different angle to come at this problem I thought looking into themes would be better than looking into jokes .

I came up with few pages of ideas but below are the best:

Clothing:
I am like a jumper, warm
I am like a jumper, I'ma pull over if the cops ask me too.
I am like a tight shirt, clingy
I am like a Fashionable belt. I am a designer
I am like a pair of clarkes shoes, senseable
I am like a pair of shin pads, Sporty
I am like a designers brand, i'ma topman
I am like a pair of yellow trousers, I'm bold
I am like a womans dress, all sassy and that.

Colour:
I am like the colour white, clean and simple
I am like the colour red, the leader of the power rangers
I am like the colour green, dipsy
I am like the monotone colour
I am like the colour orange, ginger
I am like the colour blue, not suitable for grannies
I am like the colour purple, I may contain nuts
I am like the colour black, I compliment others
I am like the colour orange, I like to tango

Food:
I am like a strong cheese, mature
I am like a  lemon, zingy
I am like a candle lit meal, romantic
I am like my nans cooked beef, tough
I am like  xmas turkey, stuffed
I am like a gingerbread pudding, ginger on top
I am like tony the tiger, greeeeatttttttttttttt
I am like a healthy diet, balanced
I am like a happy meal, childish
I am like a pizza, sometimes a little too cheesy
I am like mash and gravy, all saucy
I am like a korma, mild
I am like a cow, spotty
I am like a joe, sloppy

Here are some of the notes I made

I am like pizza - a little bit cheesy
I am like a dog - when I am nervous I get the collie wobbles
I am like the colour blue - not suitable for grannies
I am like a jumper - warm, fuzzy and always ready to pullover if the police stop me
Knowing the main things that was going to make this final design great are a great idea and great typography. It said on the 40 ways to create ideas presentation to visit the library so I went to the library and read this book in order to gain some knowledge about type and successful layout when it comes to design. I feel doing this has helped a lot and I feel more confident when it comes to this part of the design process now.
After looking for inspiration I came across this artist ( http://instagram.com/alexmdc ) and found lots of great ideas for me. I know now that I want to create my own photo using my hands, in the photography room with the universities equitment I will be able to make a great looking, professional image that is personal to me and will have my hands in it.  I then went onto to looking into other ways I could use my hands to creat a photo.
Experimentation with pizza metaphor. Using artist research as an influence .

FINAL PIECE FOR PERSONAL METAPHOR

This is "Tinky Winky" who is not usually green, he's purple but show how dipsy I am I have used the wrong character!! After some feedback from Richard I looked into what the colour green is associated with and made a few tweaks.

METAPHOR second project -

My Four

Just do it.
- A campaign launched in 1988 by Nike, It is both universal and personal and thats what makes it so successful, making Nike not just a fashion brand but sportswear as well. A motivational quote telling people to stop putting off that task you’ve been trying to do and to “Just do it”
- Initial Idea - A hot plate in a restaurant, waiter says "don't touch it its hot". A character looks like he/she is dying to touch it now they've been told they cant. Someone else at the table says....."Just do it"

People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.
- This is a proverb meaning that you shouldn’t criticise others when you have similar faults of your own.
- Initial Idea - Two people in two glass houses . One has just thrown a stone through his/her glass house causeing a hole in the wall. The other person is calling them an idiot but has a whole in there house suggesting they did it in the past so don't have a leg to stand on.

Better late than never.
- To do something later than it was expected to be done. I.e handing work in after the deadline. This metaphor is about procrastination meaning, putting off the more urgent tasks and completing more favourable ones first.
- Initial Idea - An ambulance turning up to a scene but the paitents already died proving that better late than never isnt always right.

Success, It’s a mind game.
- To be a success you first must have the mind set of someone who wants to be successful. Once you’ve decided you want to succeed it is just a matter of time
- Initial Idea -  Some sort of board game like scrable that says success and mind spelt out on the board. Taking the quote literally, making a game of the word success and mind. Not really a great idea but I struggled with this one.

The three I havent chosen meanings.

Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.
- This means that even if its on something specific like a uni project or maybe the way you live your life you should always be ready for a disaster. You should be as optermistic as you can be but be prepared for it all to go wrong.  I didn't choose this because I don't really agree with it so thought it would be more difficult to do a piece of design work about it.

Design is where science and art break even
- I think this means that you have to use both sides of your brian to create the best peice of design. It has to be aesthetically pleasing but there is a method to it which is where the sicence comes into it. This is an ok quote but I would prefer to use one of the four I have chosen as my metaphor of choice.

Pleasing people the world over
- This talks about you actions or design work is the universally accepted, it would be open to a wide auidence of both genders and religons. I didn't choose this quote becasue sometimes creating something that everyone would like doesnt get you something that just a few people love and would usually in most cases not be very experimental or unique.

Image research for idea generation
After finding the artist mentioned in the pervious project. I thought id give it a go, I found a pair of 3d glasses and the rest can been seen below.
Visual research into four quote metaphors
After looking into the meanings of the shortlisted  metaphors and the visual examples already made the metaphor I'm going to take forward and research more into is "Success is a mind game." So I continued my research and founf more strong visual examples which started my ideas generation.  I also thought it was interesting that most of the examples I found for this metaphor where all black and white which added an aged feel to it.
Final Ideas
However, I decieded to change my quote to another one of mine and had a good idea of what I thought would make a good design
I then thought it would be a good idea to make one of the tests a positive to reinforce the "Better late than never" quote

Very rough drawings for this project, the start of idea generation
Visual Research
One of my ideas was to have an ABSOLUT Double Deniem poster
I am currently reading this book on swiss design and think a "Absoult Design" Poster in the style of international design would look great.
I also had an idea of a popular TV show Breaking Bad and thought that would be a good thing to base my poster on however after some experimenting in Photoshop I decided to use Heisenberg as I thought that would fit better even though I didn't have that letter.
I then reflected on the work and decided that to change the words in order to maek the posters seem more interesting.
I then had some good feedback from my lecturer and made some developments to two of the groups favourites designs. I have changed some of the words again and done some more research into the  photos I should use for male in suit poster and made some changes in PhotoShop to the hot air balloon to make it more realsitic.
I thought of looking at films to find people of interest to use as my model rather than models themselves and thought The film "The Great Gatsby" would be a great example of debonair so started looking into examples and using different images. I then used Leonardo Dicaprio as my main focus and looked into other films he had been in. A Wolf on Wall Street is a film about a character who is stylish, confident, charming and rich which I took as a better example then The Great Gatsby.
Tie Development
After changing the word for this poster I re created the balloon effect and added a lot more effects on it to try and make it as realistic as possible. I also cropped the basket out of the photo so I could move the mountain out of the middle and over to the side which I think worked well.
I thought by making the balloon green rather than purple would suit the whole image more as it still sticks out from the blue so it's the first thing you see but also it now goes with the natural hilly landscape and a natural green.
After a very helpful one to one with my lecturer we dropped the ballon design and focused more on the debonair poster. We decided that the original was better than the remake becuase to use a film implied that this was now an advert for the movie not the drink which I had not thought about in all honesty so I went back to the other design and made one or two adjustments which I think really improved the piece.
I created a gap between his head and the page then made some adjustments to his hair so there wasnt a cut off point to his hair as well as making one or two adjustments to the tie.
