I wanted to reduce the overall illuminance levels, remove visual clutter, and enhance the geometric and angular style of architecture, which I really liked.
To start, I created a neutral image, with all reflections, glare, and light sources removed.  Then, layer by layer, I added light back where I thought would enhance the space.
The first layer of light is an ambient glow created by non-uniformly washing the walls from the ground up.  This gives the space a relaxed and open feeling.  Additional light is added to the task plane of the front desk and the exit door with downlights in the ceiling.
Task Lighting under the handrail of the stairs was added.
Thin horizontal strips of light were added to the front desk to subconciously draw people to the check in desk when they enter the space.
A slight glow was added to the frosted glass behind the front desk, again to draw people to the desk as they enter the space.
Now that the space has all of the functional light it needs, I added some visual interest with cove lighting.  There is a horizontal cove lining the ceiling above the ramped walkway on the second floor, as well as a vertical cove above the front desk to emphasize the verticality of the space.
