For this project and assignment on ‘Visual Grammar’, we were each assigned a specific quote to create a visual poster making use of aspects from semiotic representations and metaphorical approaches in our design. The quote that I was assigned to was “The human race has a truly effective weapon: laughter.”
The main idea being the visual of the jester/clown being illustrated into a gun looking character was to represent the message of how at times, the jokes that we make about others, we might think of it as something lighthearted and funny. However, have we ever thought about the possible harm and consequences that the jokes we make and the words we say might bring to those on the receiving end.
If looked upon closely, you would notice that the gun has details such as stitches at the side to represent visual aspects and attributes of a toy plushie in which their purpose was to make babies or children laugh which is similar to the intentions and job scope of a jester/clown to entertain and make others laugh as well.
The ironic combination and visual representation of these attributes of a toy, a jester/clown being integrated together with a gun which is meant to cause destruction was intended with the message and purpose to convey the meaning of the quote and to get the audience to think and ponder about this unusual visual placed in front of them.
