History is one of my favourite subjects and hobbies to take a part of. I had in my portfolio created many scenes taking place during more modern times and wanted to try my hands on a scene that took place during the medeival times. Specifcally at a blacksmiths shop with tools, swords, shields and other various items would be included to be in the scene. I was really aiming for realism as much as possible with high quality objects and assets with high quality textures.
The challenges in this scene was the layout of everything, to include a variety of objects where everything had to be in view in a small closed space (to simulate the size of how big forges were back then) were tough. The forge itself naturally had to be in focus, but to create the feeling of a forge that had been in use with tools, armor and fire going to simulate more of a feeling that someone is using through textures and lighting required extensive tries and different textures.
The coloring of the scene required lots of wood and grey, orange and muted colours to get the composition to correctly work.
The process behind the lighting was to create a natural realistic feel, it's a grey cloudy day where the colours or contrast aren't particularly strong except from the forge itself where the fire is. Working step by step with the background, fil, rim, and key lights created the final shot.
