Wall cabinet in Bog Oak.

My most recent piece from college. This cabinet encompasses work I did with a blacksmith who taught me to make pattern welded steel. From this experience I drew on the inspiration of layers to inform my design phase and bring me to this final piece. The design is minimal and sleek, designed to be wall mounted it would sit at head height. The cabinet is inconspicuous, however when holding the owners prized possessions it will make a bold statement about their own tastes.

The cabinet features a drawer and a hidden locking mechanism to prevent people from easily gaining access.
Once finished the Bog Oak, from roughly 5300BC, takes on a strong, rich, almost chocolate colour.
A No.4 Stanley plane, and a small brass hammer I manufactured, for scale.
A small drawer features at the bottom of the cabinet for holding maintenance items.
The top half of the cabinet can be taken off to access what's inside.
Showing the back of the cabinet. Here we can see the wall mounts as well as the two brass tabs. In the back of the drawer there are two steel pins which act as a locking mechanism. When the drawer is closed the pins engage, meaning you can't remove the top of the cabinet. This prevents children from gaining access, as well as slowing down thieves.
This project enabled me to use techniques I had never used before, mainly those needed for bending acrylic. This was a difficult task however I feel the end results are quite good.
