Capturing Culture: Multicultural Victoria in Focus

Capturing multicultural Victoria...

Capturing Culture is a new photography competition launched by the Victorian Multicultural Commission. The competition aims to capture the resilience and experiences of Victoria’s multicultural communities through the COVID-19 pandemic and create a visual record of a unique time in Victoria’s history. It will also capture the vibrancy, significance and connectedness of multicultural communities that existed before the pandemic, and which will prevail long afterwards.

VMC was looking for a visual identity for Capturing Culture that felt inspiring, vibrant, and inclusive. Since VMC is an entity of the Victorian Government, this visual identity would need to utilise the typeface and colour palette of the Vic Government branding.
Design option 1
This design concept takes the idea of a mosaic to create an energetic and flexible pattern that can be adapted to fit different shapes and sizes of application. The mosaic represents the rich tapestry of life in multicultural Victoria. The use of transparent gradients create an effect of light play, appropriate for a photography competition.

Design option 2
This design concept uses the motif of a circular lens to refer to the photography aspect of the competition. This motif is made up of many smaller shapes in a rainbow of colours, alluding to the rich diversity the competition aims to capture.
