Digital: Class Exercises

A collection of highlights from my graphic design classes, 2010-2014. These pieces are listed chronologically, with the most recent first, showing the change and growth consecutively over my college years.

Inspirational Poster

As one of our final projects in Graphic Design III, we were assigned to create a poster in the style of an artist that is most inspirational and influential to us. Alfons Mucha has always been one of my favorite artists with his acute attention to detail and beauty, as well as his regard for a woman. His decorative pattern and draping of clothing captivated me since I first saw his pieces. I created the background in vectors on Illustrator and imported the figure drawn in Photoshop.
Octofont

During my Independent Study in Typography, my professor suggested that I tackle creating my own decorative font. The project turned out more in-depth than I ever imagined, stretching well over the time I had allocated. Starting out traditionally, I lined the Uppercase in illustrator; the lowercase was done entirely in illustrator.
Typographic Poster

For this challenge I decided to create a typographic portrait out of songs that described or somehow touched me. I skimmed through all kinds of genres, and decades to pull out enough lyrics without repeating. Further, I drew the original piece traditionally from a photo and then traced on illustrator to create a more authentic piece to my style. In the end I decided to let the words flow out, unconstrained, mirroring my personality.
Green Design: Gardening

The assignment was to take inspiration from green design agencies and create our own pamphlet encouraging a more eco-friendly behavior. Being a gardener, I decided to promote the growing of local vegetables and fruits. I created The Green Tomato, a society that encourages and gives advice on starting private gardens. With a clean vector design, I hoped to draw the audience into greener possibilities.
Euphoric Illustration

A vector illustration of a morph attempts to convey an emotion of euphoria, uncontained and unrestricted happiness, freedom. Done in Illustrator, this was inspired by and parts were traced from an older painting.
UN Poster: Declaration of Human Rights

In Graphic Design II, we were asked to illustrate and represent one of the articles in the UN Declaration of Human Rights document. I chose the right to own land, drawing an illustration that I had in the back of my mind. Created entirely in Photoshop, the UN logo in back is reminiscent of Mucha's use of shapes. The figure’s dress was inspired by flying high above farm lands, primarily in Germany where it is so carefully geometrically divided.
Redesign of Ellen Lupton's Thinking With Type

Drawing inspiration from the sand gardens of Japan, I created a book cover for the typographic book the captured the abstractness type can create. The designs were created in Illustrator out of text from Charles Dickens’ Hard Times, and put together in InDesign.
Everybody: CD Cover Redesign

In a final project for Graphic Design I, we were asked to create a new design for any music album of our choosing. In listening to Ingrid Michaelson, and watching a few videos, I created a cover inspired by her whimsical style and Everybody music video. Drawn in Photoshop, the pieces were later imported into Illustrator.
