WEEK 8
This weeks morning lecture was an interesting reflection on technology and the possible future outcomes of it. The lecturer provided interesting resources for me to investigate for my project.
In the afternoon part of the class, many subjects were discussed but something the lecturer said really stood out to me. He said something along the lines of "There is no reason why somebody cannot achieve their goals and dreams while being in a 1st world country (ex:UK)" which I completely disagree with due to the existence of something called privilege. While somebody can work extremely hard their whole life and there will be positive outcomes from that effort, the amount of recognition you get from that work completely depends on who you are.
Just last week the class did an exercise involving this wheel of privilege, the more traits you have from the centre of the wheel the more society listens to you and respects you as an individual. To put it simply, a white man and a black woman can be born into the same circumstances of life and work equally hard, but the white man will almost always achieve more in life than the black woman due to nothing more than the body they were born in in this systematically racist and misogynistic society. Another perfect example is by simply searching who are the top 10 richest people in the world, 10 out of 10 are a man and 9 out of 10 are white.
A person's success is not mainly defined by luck (though there is always a bit of it involved) but their circumstances, their privilege and, sure, hard work (or unethical labour for the 1% and more).
