Our Interaction with Color

My project “Our Interaction with Color”, is a modern day take on the original Josef Albers “Interaction of Color”. By dimentionalizing the flat plates I am able to bring a deeper understanding of color theory to the viewer. The aim of this project is to develop through experience an eye for color, specifically seeing color action as well as color relationships.

To fully understand all of the possible ways that different colors interact with each other I first needed to create a way to see color in a three dimensional space. Using clear plastic cubes colored with the primary colors I was able to not only have light pass through each color but also have light pass through two cubes/colors at the same time, thus showing how different colors interact with one another.
The second phase of the project involved revisiting Josef Albers, “Interaction of Color”. This seminal book on color theory, although good, lacks a proper display of color interaction and only has a handful of color plates (samples) to look at. I took my original color cubes and translated them into a two dimensional space showing basic color theory. Then when the three cubes were not sufficient to show proper color interaction I created a set of 27 separate cubes each with their own smaller cubes inside. Using this larger cube I was able to show how multiple layers of color interact.
