فن الفيديو هو أحد الفنون الحديثة التي تعتمد أساسا على الصورة المتحركة والصوت كعناصر تكوينية للعمل الفني. يتفق فن الفيديو مع السينما في اللغة ولكنهما يختلفان في القواعد المتبعة. إذ يتعمد فناني الفيديو كسر جميع قواعد السينما٬ فلا ممثلين ولا حبكة درامية ولا تسلسل زمني واضح لأفلام فن الفيديو.

يعتبر فن الفيديو فن حديث قديم إذ بدأت تجارب الفيديو في منتصف الستينيات من القرن الماضي٬ لكن قلة انتشار التجارب المطروحة جعلت هذا الفن بطئ الإنتشار. ويعزى ذلك لصعوبة إنتاج هذه الأعمال التي كانت حينها تحتاج إلى تحميض الأفلام وآلات مونتاج مكلفة مما صعب على الكثير من الفنانين الحصول عليها.

ولكن في العقود الثلاث الأخيرة ومع تطور تقنيات التصوير وإنتشار كاميرات الفيديو المحمولة وإنتشار استخدام الكمبيوتر لأغراض فنية وما تبع من عوامل عصر الملعوماتية، اصبح من السهل على الفنانين وكذلك الناس العاديين خوض التجارب في هذا المجال وربما اكتشاف ملكات لم تكن مستعملة. وهكذا أصبح الفيديو الأكثر انتشارا من الفنون الحديثة.

كغيرهم من الفنانين، يسعى فنانو الفيديو آرت لعدة نهج وأساليب كما تدفعهم أسباب شاسعة الإختلاف لمزاولة فنهم. فمنهم من يحاول إيصال أنطباع أو فكرة حول وضع إجتماعي أو بيئى أو سياسي معين، وهناك من يحاول أن يصدمنا اويذهلنا وهناك من يريدنا أن نراعي التفاصيل، وكثير منهم يحاول أن يجعلنا نعيد النظر في المألوف حتي يصبح غير مألوفا وجديدا مرة ثانية. وهذه هى أمثلة فقط وليست حصرا لما يقدمه هؤلاء الفنانين.

كثيرا ما نشعر أن هؤلاء الفنانين يستعيرون قليلا من إنتباهنا ليحثونا على أن نثمن وقتنا وأن نرعي كل ما حولنا من بيئة ومخلوقات وأن نسعي نحو الذهول والجمال لأن الكون ملئ بذلك. الفيديو آرت أذن هو فن عصرنا الرقمي التكنولوجي ولكنه يحمل رسالة فنية خالدة.

Video Art: is a modern art that is mainly based on the moving image and sound as formative elements of the artwork. Video art resembles cinema in its language, but plays by different rules. In fact, video artists deliberately break all the rules of cinema, for there are no actors in video art films.

Video art experiments began in the mid-1960s, but these efforts did not spread as the processes of video production then were very complicated requiring bulky cameras, film development, and editing equipment which very few artists could afford or even easily access.

But in the last three decades, with the development of new imaging technologies, the spread of portable video cameras, the widespread use of computers for the purposes of art along with other developments of the informations age, it became easier for artists, as well as ordinary people, to experiment with video. In the digital age we inhabit, video art has become the most popular artistic media.

Like other artists, video artists seek to make art driven by different reasons, and use several methods and approaches. Some artist try to deliver an impression or idea about social issues or political or environmental causes. And there are those who try to shock us or thrills, while others want us to look at the details, hoping to make us rethink the familiar until it becomes unfamiliar and new again.

One often feels that video artists try to hold our attention briefly in order to urge us to appreciate our time and to pay attention to our environment and the other creatures who occupy it with us. Full of beauty and surprise, these films encourage us never forego seeking these essential gifts of existence. Video Art is the art medium of our digital era, but it nonetheless carries the eternal message of art.
