Dhobi Ghat is located at Mahalaxmi. It was found by an association of washer-men 140 years ago. But the place has changed with time. It was initiated in the Victorian Era and still has its own name " Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat " which means a place where washer-men cleans clothes & dries them. Dhobi Ghat is more than 125 years old, a well known open air laundromat in Mumbai. In early days the Ghat had two different systems for washing & soaking but in the days of 1890 - 1895 washer-men figured out a huge increase in population. The washer-man are known as Dhobis. It garnered a Guinness Book of World records entry under most people hand-washing clothes at a single location in 2011. 

Over One Lakh clothes are washed each day. The annual turnover of the Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat is around Rs 100 crore.
