A Closer Look
For this assignment, I wanted to bring my own talents to the table other than photography, which is makeup. Fashion is a big part of my life and I have admired clothes and different styles of makeup throughout my life. I take time to learn about different styles of clothes from different eras of fashion and makeup from the past and the present. With these influences, I have learned what my own style is and what other styles I admire, and I wanted to bring this to the forefront of my image that I took. Makeup was a big inspiration for this photo, but not just the makeup. I believe the human face is an extremely unique and beautiful part of the body and we lose detail from it when we pull further away from the subject, so the face is a large focus in this photo as well. I have pulled inspiration from a lot of Richard Avedon’s work I’ve seen as well as more modern photographers similar to Ciro Galluccio with his use of being up close and personal with the subject and the use of colour. My photo uses complimentary colours to its advantage as the makeup look uses two colours from the opposite of the colour wheel, and they blend nicely together as well as the choice of clothing to make the minimal amount of orange eyeshadow to pop from the different blues. What really puts focus on the subject is the plainer background similar again to Avedon who always photographs with a white or gray background in his studio portraits. All these elements come together to create a photo that draws the attention to the different features of the subjects face and the makeup look which is outgoing and fun.
