In 2018, Lynda Lowry released an article detailing religious persecution in North Korea, entitled “Why There Are No Christian Children in North Korea.” Challenged by a design professor to design for a popular magazine using an art medium of choice, I created a piece for The New Yorker to accompany Lowry’s article. This piece utilizes both organic (hand-drawn) and digital illustrations to tell the story of a young girl who was forced to conceal her family’s beliefs to evade government persecution.
