Narrative drawing
Brief Summary
Aim to have dramatic impact on viewers, making them stop to look, and hopefully, stop to think. Attempt to involve the viewer by creating and build up or sense of drama and anticipation within the moment or event that you choose to depict. As mentioned in PART 1: Include at least one reasonably sized, conceptual portrait and at least one key object used in a metaphoric sense. The inclusion of a hand(s) in combination with the portrait and/or object should further serve to anchor the narrative. Reference the setting with key spatial cues and include other figures if appropriate.

Design Strategy - Rationale
The memory I thought of that lead me to the insight is one where I bought a blender to make healthy smoothies, but ended up using it to make ice cream and milkshakes. The insight I got from it, is that bad habits die hard I thought of a lot of bad habits that people might have and decided that nail biting would be an interesting choice. In this final artwork I wanted to depict a
girl battling her struggle with nail biting. I wanted to show her comfortable in her natural environment, yet anxious to
be rid of this habit. She is in her room, on her bed, mindlessly chewing on her hair while reading a book that gives advice on how to kick this habit. She wears oven mitts to protect her nails from being chewed on. Her sock has a hole in that indicates that she would chew anything but her nails. A few random objects such as wires and the book, have bite marks on them. I tried to convey her anxiousness through her posture and facial expression. Her legs are pulled up towards her body and she is slouching forward. The wrinkles on her forehead show that she is frowning and trying to concentrate really hard. She wears comfortable clothes, but the one shoe on the bed is meant to show her discomfort as she struggles with this battle. I tried to make her face the focal point by giving it a lot of detail while rendering the rest of the artwork more softly and out of focus. The contrast between her hair and the background is an attempt to further draw more attention to her face. Her glasses are also drawn a lot darker than her face which creates contrast and draws even more attention. The mark making in the hair is harsh but softens as it moves away from the face. The mark making becomes a lot looser in areas that are outside of the focal point.
