FF DIN - typespecimen

FF DIN is a sans serif typeface published in 1995 by the FontFont foundry and created by Albert Jan Pool with the collaboration of: Achaz Reuss, designer of FF DIN light, Nicolai Gogoll who worked on the italic version, and Olaf Stein with Birgit Hartmann, who contributed to the creation of the condensed DIN. The name DIN is the acronym of Deutsches Institut für Normung: German Institute for Standardization.
In 1994, Pool met Erik Spiekermann, the founder of FontShop, who asked Pool to create a fresher version of DIN 1451, a very important character for German history. For the revisitation of the font, Pool has remained extremely faithful to the forms and standards of the previous version. Compared to DIN 1451, FF DIN has more weights and widths, but also numerous refinements that allow the font to fit better for digital use. Going into detail, FF DIN is a geometric looking font with a very low contrast. Include two widths and five weights, each with its own italic variant (obtained from the 11.3 ° inclination of the round version). FF DIN appears very light in its regular version, so much that, among those present, medium is the weight that comes closest to the normal weight of DIN 1451. The condensed variant of FF DIN arrives in 1998 following the growing demand for the character for the package design.
The success of the font did not end in the Nineties, in fact, in September 2017, FF DIN achieved the title of best-seller on MyFonts
"Albert’s brief was to take the regular weight and subtly make
it a good typeface. He did it so well that it looks exactly like the original, but much better, especially in smaller sizes. Albert also added weights...FF DIN looks as if DIN had always had those weights because Albert didn’t let his ego interfere with the job."

– Erik Spiekermann, 2009

ALORS

Alors.
