Colombia´s Community Leaders Assesination Protests 2018

In 2018, Colombians marched worldwide to protest against their civil rights leaders assassinations. Candlelight vigils where held at Plaza de Bolívar where Colombians in Bogotá paid respect to the hundreds of social leaders cowardly killed in the last years. 

A young man hanging Jorge Eliécer Gaitán’s image, he was the leader of the populist movement in Colombia 🇨🇴. Through the late 30’s and 40’s was major of Bogotá, minister of education and labor. Gaitán was assassinated during his second presidential campaign in 1948 setting of the Bogotazo.

Protesters at Plaza de la Hoja with all types of signs where all kind of people raised their voices through art, with distinctive messages in diverse languages.


Claudia López, former vice-presidential candidate in Colombia’s 2018 presidential elections for the Green Alliance party, campaigning for the anti-corruption consultation taking place on August 26th 2018. Even peasants gathered at Plaza de la Hoja to resonate their thrusts. “Corruption sponsors the death of social leaders,” reads a sign painted by an artist. 

Sometimes conveying ideas is done in other ways rather than words. Art translates concepts into symbols, it also gives the imagination free-reign, allowing the audience experience the external world in different ways. Senior citizens, lifted their spirits and raised their flags!
