Al-Hol Displaced Person’s Camp Still Facing Pressures

A passionate and focused person who spends her time giving back to those less fortunate, Nadia Cavner lives in Springfield, Missouri. Nadia Cavner enjoys doing many things in her downtime, but none as much as being an activist for good causes. The Islamic State (IS) infiltration of the massive Al-Hol camp in Syria is one cause on which she focuses, and things are starting to look brighter.

The Al-Hol refugee camp was originally set up in 1991 for 15,000 people who were displaced during the Gulf War. In the early 2000s the camp was expanded due to the war in Iraq, and it is still in use, with numbers peaking around 73,000 at the start of 2019. For several years, this camp has been a hub for IS fighters and terrorists.

In 2021 a crackdown began at the Al-Hol refugee camp, as the Syrian Democratic Forces, along with other countries, look to remove the terrorists from the camp. On April 1, 2021, Syrian forces moved in at arrested over 70 people for being IS contributors, operators, or sympathizers. Of those who were arrested on this day, five were thought to be IS leaders that had direct contact with the group itself.

With the number of people suffering from food scarcity, disease, and horrible living conditions, the harboring of terrorists adds another layer of trouble for these people. While there is progress being made in Al-Hol more needs to be done to ensure the safety and well-being of its inhabitants.
